On Being an Ally

Here's a pretty neat little article on being an ally to trans people.

Trans Respect/Etiquette/Support 101

National Survey on Transgender Discrimination

The National Center for Transgender Equality and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force released a survey on September 11, 2008, for transgender and gender non-conforming people.  The aim of the survey is to collect data on discrimination against transgender people in housing, employment, public accommodation, health care, education, family life, and criminal justice.  From the NCTE website: "NCTE and the Task Force have partnered with Pennsylvania State University’s Center for the Study of Higher Education to collect and analyze the data. Applying rigorous academic standards to the investigation will strengthen any case made to legislators, policy makers, health care providers, and others whose decisions impact the lives of transgender people. A national team of experts in survey research and transgender issues developed the questionnaire."

This survey will take very little of your time, and if enough people take it, the results could be powerful.

Vote!

It's almost election time, and now is our chance to have a say in the government of the future!  Will we elect politicians and policymakers who are receptive to trans people and our issues?  Will we change our state and federal constitutions so that we have the same rights as everyone else?  Will we protect ourselves from hate crimes and unjust treatment?  Now is our time to act!

The National Center for Transgender Equality has put together some helpful information for transgender voters.  Because of issues such as names and appearances no longer matching IDs, conflicting identification information, and general transphobia, it can be difficult for transgender people to vote.  However, our voices are extremely important.  If you think you may have trouble voting, definitely check out this guide.

The Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund will have lawyers staffing their hotline from 6 am to 7 pm EST on November 4th to respond to callers who experience discrimination based on gender identity or expression at the polls.  If you experience discrimination at your polling place, call their hotline at (646) 862-9396.
